Health Care Admin

Medical Office Assistant

Work in the heart of the fast-paced health care industry as a Medical Office Assistant. UCW Academy of Health offers the Medical Office Assistant Program. During this 32-week diploma program, students will learn all aspects of running a medical office, from administrative to technical skills. Also, obtain “real world” experience with a five-week practicum at the end of the program. During the MOA program, you will learn the latest medical office best practices, such as bookkeeping, computer skills, organizing medical records, transcribing medical information, operating specialized billing software, and preparing and administering basic medical tests. Other core curriculum focuses on human anatomy and diseases, medical terminologies, pharmacology, and clinical procedures. MOAs are fully trained to answer basic patient questions about their conditions and medication. Supporting courses will help you develop interpersonal and customer relations skills, and focus on career development and the job search. Meanwhile, sustainability also plays a role in the MOA program. Learn how to “green up” your work and home life. Upon completion of the program, you will receive a Medical Office Assistant Diploma, a Standard First Aid Certificate and a CPR “C” Certificate. Graduates are trained to in the following positions: Admitting Clerk, Emergency Room Admitting Clerk, Medical Secretary, Medical Transcriptionist, Medical Receptionist, Medical Billing Clerk or Medical Office Assistant. more

Medical Office Assistant Certificate

Play an integral part in a professional medical office upon graduation of UCW Academy of Health’s Medical Office Assistant Certificate. Gain specialized knowledge and skills in standard administrative duties and learn how to assist with patient examinations and medical transcription. Find career opportunities in a variety of work environments such as private medical offices, clinics, and hospitals. As a pre-requisite, all students must have at least one year of clerical/administrative work experience in addition to proficiency in Microsoft Word and a typing speed of at least 40 words per minute. Students enrolled in the certificate program develop these basic skill sets by taking administrative courses with topics including reception, human relations, records management, banking and financial records, and word processing. Technical skills in medical terminology, human anatomy, and medical machine transcription are also taught in order to enhance a graduate’s knowledge of medical sciences for a future administrative position. To complete the Medical Office Assistant Certificate, students must participate in a mandatory 4-week practicum at a medical office job site. This opportunity gives students a real-world perspective about their future career. UCW Academy of Health supports each student by offering a Career and Employment Strategies module which teaches students job planning, searching, and interviewing. more

Nursing

Health Care Assistant

Elderly and special needs patients need fully trained aides to care for them on both a short- and long-term basis. UCW Academy of Health offers an intensive 27-week Health Care Assistant program that will provide you with the specialized training needed to work as an intermediate or extended caregiver. Potential career opportunities include long-term care aide, residential care attendant or home health care worker. During this program, students learn about chronic conditions, anatomy, physiology and medical terminology. Additional, courses focus on data collection and monitoring patient health. Additional courses teach students how to create a support network for the family members of a special needs patient. Through training and practica, students also gain the skills and experience to work with geriatric patients and those with chronic conditions, such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. The Health Care Assistant program also provides “real world’ training with two clinical care supervised learning positions. You will spend three weeks working in intermediate care and four weeks in an extended care role. Practical Nursing

Practical Nurses work in concert with fellow health care specialists in settings like acute care wards, private homes, public schools and long-term care facilities. The Practical Nursing Diploma program at the Academy of Health trains students to work in medical, surgical and rehabilitation care in a variety of positions. The 51-week intensive training program introduces students to the fundamental duties and responsibilities of a Practical Nurse. The curriculum follows standards laid out by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of British Columbia. Students are trained in both holistic and clinical practices, with a focus on the Nursing Arts. Courses combine classroom learning and lab work, as well as three practicum placements. During this supervised hands-on training, students gain experience in facilities dealing with acute care, gerontology and community medical care. At the end of the supervised learning, students participate in a preceptorship and job search training, to help transition them from student to graduate. more

Community Health Care

A career in care giving is the perfect way to make a difference in your community and the lives of those who need specialized aide. The Community Health Care program at UCW Academy of Health provides training and hands-on experience for work in settings like schools, community centres and care facilities. This 43-week intensive program prepares students for care positions in residencies, special needs facilities and more. UCW Academy of Health’s highly trained instructors teach the skills needed to work with developmental disorders, special needs patients, behavioural disabilities, mental health disorders and geriatric patients. In addition, students learn how to plan recreational activities and programs, and run rehabilitation programs using art and music therapy. During the program, students gain experience in their field through three practica. Students spend three weeks in a non-clinical care facility, such as a school or community centre; three weeks in an intermediate care facility; and four weeks in an extended care facility, Graduates receive the following certifications: Community Health Care Worker Diploma; Long Term Geriatric Care Aid Certificate; Resident Care Attendant Diploma; Alzheimer’s Certificate; Mental Health Community Care Certificate; Basics of Medications Certificate; Standard First Aid Certificate; CPR “C” Certificate; Food Safe Level 1 Certificate and a WHMIS Certificate. Addictions and Community Services Worker

Reward yourself with a multi-faceted career that is committed to assisting alcohol and drug abuse clients within your community. UCW Academy of Health’s Addictions and Community Services Worker diploma caters to students who are interested in working in the professional health care sector. Graduates provide support in child, youth, and family social services, alcoholism, drug abuse, family violence and senior care. Career opportunities also exist in group homes, correctional and community mental health centres, and facilities for the physically and developmentally handicapped. Students are introduced to a wide range of core skills including writing, file management, assessment and treatment planning, counselling, and communications. Since addictions and community service workers are required to interact with clients and health care professionals on a daily basis these core skills are essential to the job. Additionally, students study the topics of psychology, pharmacology, addiction prevention and intervention, and other medical areas. Each student must complete a total of 320 hours over the course of 8 weeks in a mandatory clinical placement. UCW Academy of Health provides a Career and Employment Strategies course that covers job searching and interviewing techniques, resume writing, and job counselling services to help students prepare for the work world. more
